Dance Floor Calculator — Right Size for Your Guests
Calculate the right dance floor size for your guest count and dancing style.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates dance floor size based on guest numbers and dancing style.
The formula
Dancers = guests x dancer percentage
Floor area = dancers x sqm per dancer
Space per dancer varies by style: 0.45 sqm for disco, 0.5 sqm general, 0.6 sqm wedding, and 1.0 sqm for ceilidh. Panel count is based on standard 60cm x 60cm hire panels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Plan for about 0.5 sqm per dancing guest. Typically 30-40% of guests dance at any one time. For 100 guests, a 4m x 5m dance floor works well for general party dancing.
At a wedding or birthday party, expect 30-50% of guests to dance at peak times. At a young crowd party or disco, this can rise to 60-70%. For formal events, 20-30% is more typical.
Yes, ceilidh dancing needs about double the space of regular party dancing because of the group formations, spinning, and vigorous movements. Plan for at least 1 sqm per dancer for a ceilidh.
Most hire companies use 60cm x 60cm interlocking panels. Some use larger 90cm x 90cm panels. The calculator uses the standard 60x60cm size. Check with your hire company for their specific panel sizes.
