Frequently Asked Questions
A giant (Nordic) tipi has roughly 130 sqm of total internal floor, but once you allow for the central poles, fire pit, bar and circulation a conservative ~50 sqm is usable for guests — that is the figure this calculator uses. On that basis one tipi fits around 65 standing or 30-35 seated. With furniture and circulation optimised, hire companies quote up to ~70-80 standing or ~60-72 seated per giant tipi; two linked tipis suit 80-120 seated or up to 130 standing.
A stretch tent (also called a Bedouin tent) is a flexible fabric canopy supported by poles. They come in various sizes from 40 sqm upward and can be shaped to fit unusual spaces. They are open-sided, making them ideal for summer events. Most are waterproof but not windproof.
A 5m bell tent has a circular floor of about 19.6 sqm (π × 2.5²), but the sloping walls mean the usable standing area is closer to 16 sqm — the figure this calculator uses. It works best as a chill-out area for 8-10 guests with cushions and rugs, or around 6-8 seated. Bell tents are popular for festival-themed parties and glamping events.
A standard 3m x 3m pop-up gazebo covers 9 sqm. For standing shelter, each covers about 12 guests. For seated use, around 6 guests per gazebo. They are useful for barbecue shelter, drink stations, or garden party rain cover. Peg them down securely in the UK weather.
In the UK, temporary structures for events on private land generally do not need planning permission if erected for no more than 28 days in a calendar year (GPDO 2015 Part 4 Class B). However, check with your local council, especially for large marquees or tipis. Separately, if you sell alcohol or provide regulated entertainment at an unlicensed site, you need a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) from your council — a TEN covers up to 499 people (including staff) at any one time. Events of 500 or more people need a full premises licence (Licensing Act 2003).
