Cake Candle Calculator — Birthday Cake Candles

Traditionally, one candle per year of age plus one extra "to grow on." For adults or large numbers, number candles (e.g. a 4 and a 0 for 40) are more practical — you only need one figure candle per digit of the age. Sparkler candles are impressive for milestones like 18th, 21st, and 50th birthdays.

Candles are usually spread across the cake top about 1.5–2cm apart rather than packed edge to edge, which works out at roughly one candle per 22cm² of top area. On that basis a standard 8-inch (20cm) cake takes about 14 candles (12–15 comfortably) and a 10-inch (25cm) cake about 22 (20–25). For older children or adults, switch to number candles or group fewer candles together. This calculator flags whether your candles will fit and shows the realistic maximum.

Trick candles (relighting candles) appear to go out when blown but reignite after a few seconds. They are great fun for kids but can frustrate very young children. Always have a normal set of candles ready as backup, and supervise carefully.

Standard birthday candle packs typically contain 12 or 24 candles. Number candle sets come as individual digits. Sparkler candle packs usually contain 1-6 candles. Check the pack size before buying to avoid running short.
