Fairy Light Calculator — Metres of Lights Needed
Calculate how many metres of fairy lights you need for your party venue or outdoor space.
Spare allowance for corners, draping slack and dud bulbs (set the amount in Advanced Options)
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates fairy light requirements based on the area or length to cover and your chosen hanging style.
The formula
Draped: Wall run in metres × 1.3 (allows for hanging loops and swag slack).
Curtain / waterfall: Width × 5 vertical strands per metre × drop height. Each strand is as long as the drop, so a taller curtain needs proportionally more — a 1 m drop and a 3 m drop are very different. UK curtain lights are typically 2-3 m drops at ≈20 cm strand spacing.
Ceiling canopy: Ceiling area in m² × 3 for multiple passes across the ceiling.
Wrapped: Pole/beam length in metres × 4 for a loose banister or pole wrap. Dense tree-style wrapping uses far more — Lights4fun’s rule is about 5 m per 2 ft of tree (≈8 m per metre), so scale up for tight wraps.
Standard fairy light strings are 10 m with 100 LEDs (10 LEDs/m). A spare allowance (default 10%, adjustable in Advanced Options) can be added for corners, slack and dud bulbs.
