How We Calculate This

This calculator gives a quick, party-shopping estimate of balloon quantities based on guest count and decoration style.

The formula

Total balloons = guests × balloons per guest × size factor + spares

The rate varies by decoration style: 1.5 per guest for casual, 3 for moderate, and 5 for full balloon decor. A 15% spare allowance is added by default to cover popping and inflation failures.

Balloon size matters: a balloon’s projected coverage scales with the square of its diameter, so larger balloons fill the same space with fewer units. We use the 28cm (11in) standard as the reference (factor 1), so 40cm (16in) balloons need roughly half the count and 60cm (24in) about a quarter. (Verified coverage: an 11in balloon covers ≈ 0.66 sq ft, a 16in ≈ 1.4 sq ft.)

A note on the method: “balloons per guest” is a rough rule of thumb for casual party buying, not an industry standard. For arches, garlands and ceilings, professionals size by length or area instead — plan roughly 25 balloons per metre for a full organic garland, or 2–3 balloons per square foot for a balloon ceiling. Use those figures for structured decor and treat this headline as a starting point.
