How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates cutlery needs by course type and adds serving utensils.

Cutlery by meal type

  • Finger food: 1 fork per guest (assumes most items need a fork — for true hand-held canapés ~1 dessert fork per 2 guests is plenty, per Expo Hire)
  • Buffet: 1 fork + 1 knife per guest
  • 2-course: 1 set for main + dessert fork + spoon
  • 3-course: 2 forks + 2 knives + dessert fork + spoon

Serving utensils: 2 per 10 guests. A single spare margin (your Spare Percentage, plus the optional Breakage Buffer) is added across all pieces — UK hire firms suggest ~10% in total.
