Wine Calculator — Bottles Per Guest
Calculate how many bottles of wine you need for your party based on guest numbers, event length, and pour size.
How We Calculate This
This calculator uses the standard catering formula for wine quantities.
The formula
Total glasses = wine drinkers x (2 + additional hours)
Bottles = total glasses / glasses per bottle
Glasses per bottle depends on pour size: 6 at 125ml, approximately 4 at 175ml, or 3 at 250ml. Bottles are split into red, white, and rosé at a 40/40/20 ratio by default.
Frequently Asked Questions
A standard 75cl bottle pours 5-6 glasses at 125ml (6 exactly, but with slight spillage 5 is safer to budget for), about 4 glasses at 175ml, or 3 glasses at 250ml. Most UK restaurants serve 175ml as a standard glass, but 125ml is the standard measure for party planning.
Plan for about half a bottle per wine-drinking guest for a 3-4 hour party, or a full bottle for longer events. Not all guests will drink wine — typically 40-60% choose wine over beer or spirits.
A 50/50 split works well for most events. In summer, shift to 40% red and 60% white/rosé. In winter, go 60% red and 40% white. If you know your guests well, adjust to their preferences.
Rosé is increasingly popular in the UK, especially for summer events. Plan for about 20% of your wine to be rosé at warm-weather parties, less in winter.
